About Us

“We are committed to bringing hope, health, restoration, clarity, and work opportunities to the homeless population so that they can begin to live out God’s promises of who they are while giving back to their community.”

Founder of Hope On The Way

Our History

Hope on the Way was born out of a shared passion for serving the homeless community. Our founders had been working independently with the homeless population for up to 30 years before joining forces in 2019.

The vision for Hope on the Way started when our founder, Lorie Meynig, attended her first city council meeting. There, she witnessed millions of dollars being allocated to homeless resources – without Jesus at the center. In that moment, the Holy Spirit stirred a fire in her heart to establish a Christ-centered homeless shelter that would provide both practical support and the hope found only in Jesus, because without Him, there is no true hope.

God quickly connected Lorie with Barbara Bucklin and Sergeant Drew McAngus, both of whom have spent many years deeply committed to serving the homeless community. Barbara has lovingly walked alongside those experiencing homelessness for decades, always extending open arms and an open heart. Likewise, as a sergeant for Precinct 3, Drew assembled a specialized unit dedicated solely to working with the homeless population. To this day, he continues to be a constant presence in homeless camps, personally engaging with individuals, assessing their needs, and connecting them to resources.

Determined to find real solutions, Lorie and the team immediately started holding round table discussions with other like-minded Christians to find a Christian-based model - the only real hope for the homeless. As the vision grew, God faithfully opened doors – leading them to meet with city leaders, pastors, community advocates, and faith-based organizations to develop a strategy for addressing homelessness in Austin. They held weekly meetings, visited areas with significant homeless populations – such as Church Under the Bridge – and collaborated with over 25 ministries across the city to bring change. Lorie also worked at Camp Esperanza for three years and Sunrise Housing for eight months, learning firsthand about the exact needs of those experiencing homelessness. Additionally, the team at Hope on the Way provided thousands of dollars' worth of essential supplies to freeze shelters while sharing the Word and love of Jesus.

In addition to direct outreach, Hope on the Way has visited multiple homeless shelters and studied the effectiveness of programs across Texas. Through all of these experiences, we have built strong relationships within the homeless community and developed a clear vision for lasting impact.

We believe that walking in our calling brings joy. Jesus has placed a calling on each of our lives, and the members of Hope on the Way are committed to answering that call and serving with love, compassion, and unwavering faith.

Our Mission

To share the HOPE of Jesus by building safe communities and providing services that light THE WAY toward healthy living with opportunities for advancement and fulfillment of God-given purposes.
